Heerenveen moved level with Ajax in the Eredivisie after beating Roda 2-1 on Saturday, as Feyenoord lost at home to NEC.
Morocco midfielder Oussama Assaidi struck with three minutes remaining before half-time to give visitors Heerenveen the lead at the Parkstad Limburg Stadion.
Serbia’s Filip Djuricic made it 2-0 four minutes into the second half.
Defender Jagos Vukovic pulled one back for Roda on 55 minutes, but the home side were unable to find an equaliser in the time remaining.
Roda’s third consecutive defeat leaves them 15th, three points outside the relegation zone.
Heerenveen have now won three matches in succession, a run that has lifted the team up to sixth place, level on 20 points with Ajax.
Their rise comes at the expense of Feyenoord, who went down 1-0 at home to NEC in the late kick-off.
Nick Van der Velden’s goal seven minutes into the match at De Kuip settled the contest in the away team’s favour.
The victory sees NEC put further distance between themselves and the relegation zone.
Elsewhere, Groningen came from behind to draw 1-1 at RKC Waalwijk, with Petter Andersson’s goal in the 77th minute cancelling out Sander Duits’ first-half opener.
And NAC Breda took all three points from their match at home to Vitesse Arnhem, thanks to Donny Gorter’s penalty in first-half stoppage time.
