FC Twente jumped to the top of the Eredivisie on Sunday with a 5-2 victory over strugglers ADO Den Haag.
It was not all smooth sailing for Co Adriaanse’s men, however, as they trailed early courtesy of Lex Immers’ penalty on 14 minutes at the De Grolsch Veste.
But Twente hit straight back when Marc Janko scored within two minutes, and it stayed 1-1 to the interval.
After the break, Douglas and Luuk de Jong goals gave Twente a two-goal buffer, but John Verhoek pulled one back on 77 minutes to leave the visitors within striking distance at 3-2 down.
But almost as soon as they had scored, Den Haag had conceded, as Emir Bajrami reinstated Twente’s two-goal lead, before de Jong’s second of the game in injury-time capped it off.
AZ Alkmaar are level on points and goal difference with Twente after their 2-1 away win over RKC Waalwijk.
Rasmus Elm converted a 10th-minute penalty, but the promoted club were level when Geoffrey Castillion netted in first-half injury-time.
Charlison Benschop then put AZ back in front in the 65th minute, to keep them on pace with the league leaders.
PSV Eindhoven and Ajax played out a 2-2 draw at Philips Stadion, with visitors Ajax twice coming from behind.
Fred Rutten’s outfit jumped to an early advantage when Tim Matavz netted on two minutes.
Bookending the first half, however, was Kolbeinn Sigthorsson’s strike deep into injury-time to leave the match poised at 1-1.
Georginio Wijnaldum scored from the spot 10 minutes into the second stanza, but Dmitri Bulykin responded in the 79th minute to keep Ajax unbeaten through six matches.
PSV are four points adrift of leaders Twente in fifth spot, while Ajax are one point shy of the top in third.
In the late kickoff, Utrecht were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Heracles.
