Eredivisie title contenders Twente and PSV Eindhoven both recorded wins on Saturday to keep the pressure on league leaders AZ Alkmaar.
Steve McClaren’s Twente side needed until the second half to break through before registering a 2-0 win at home to Roda JC.
Brazilian-born defender Douglas gave the hosts the lead when he headed in the opener on 55 minutes, and substitute Wesley Verhoek added the second late on.
Twente are a point adrift of AZ, who travel to Vitesse on Sunday, while Ajax are third with the top six all within striking distance of first place.
PSV, who are fourth, had Tim Matavz and Memphis Depay net in their 2-0 win over VVV Venlo at Philips Stadion.
Matavz struck early in the encounter and Phillip Cocu’s side took all three points when Depay sealed the win in the last minute.
The hosts collected the important win despite a 70th-minute penalty miss from Ola Toivonen.
Meanwhile, fifth-placed Feyenoord moved to within two points of AZ courtesy of their 3-1 win over NAC Breda.
Otman Bakkal, Ruben Schaken and Sekou Cisse were all on the scoresheet in Rotterdam.
Heerenveen are also two points adrift of Gertjan Verbeek’s team after Bas Dost’s brace guided them to a 3-1 win at Groningen.
