Twente Enschede remain three points clear in the Eredivisie after the top two teams both won on Sunday, while Ajax were held at home.
Twente led at half-time in their match at home to AZ Alkmaar courtesy of Nacer Chadli’s goal in the 20th minute at De Grolsch Veste.
AZ’s hopes took a major blow early in the second half, when they lost Adam Maher and Jozy Altidore to red cards in the space of a minute.
Dusan Tadic doubled the home side’s lead from the penalty spot on 60 minutes, before Luc Castaignos issued the killer blow when he netted Twente’s third just two minutes later.
Twente are top on 21 points, three ahead of PSV Eindhoven, who cruised to a 4-0 win at home to NAC Breda.
First-half goals from Jeremain Lens and Ola Toivonen saw the home side reach the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead, and they made sure of all three points when Mark Van Bommel and Georgino Wijnaldum added to the tally in the second half.
Also on Sunday, Utrecht earned a point in a 1-1 draw away to Ajax, with Fabian Sporkslede’s own-goal cancelling out Ryan Babel’s early opener for the hosts.
Finally, Bruno Martins Indi netted a 90th-minute equaliser as 10-man Feyenoord snatched a 2-2 draw away to Groningen.
