RB Salzburg needed a small last-round miracle to get through the group stages in the Champions League – they needed to beat trophy holders Liverpool at their Red Bull Arena in Austria, and Erling Haaland, the in-demand teenage sensation who had scored 28 goals in 21 games this season before this clash, was very optimistic going into it.
However, it proved a step too big for the Austrian team as they succumbed to a 0-2 defeat, courtesy of strikes from Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah. Instead of delivering on his promise to score against the European champions again (he scored in their 4-3 defeat at Anfield), he was substituted in the 75th minute, but not before he revealed his frustration when Salah scored Liverpool’s second from an incredible angle.
