Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton hopes his players will learn from their ‘uncharacteristic’ 3-1 loss to West Brom on Sunday.
Nigeria international Peter Odemwingie scored a brace and Cameroon international Somen Tchoyi added another for the Baggies, who dominated for long periods.
Hughton was particularly disappointed with the way each of West Brom’s goals came from Newcastle errors, two weeks after the Magpies lost 5-1 at Bolton Wanderers.
“It’s not like us, we’re on the back of two away defeats where we’ve conceded goals, it hadn’t been like us to concede the type of goals that we have but we have got to make sure we learn from this one,” Hughton told Sky Sports.
“If there was an example of how unforgiving this league is then it is today and we have got to make sure we learn from that.”
Danish forward Peter Lovenkrands nabbed a consolation goal for Newcastle in injury time, but Hughton said his players simply were not good enough.
“It was probably 35 minutes into that first half before we got a decent period of play where I thought we were good enough on the ball,” Hughton said.
“We were able to restrict their goal-scoring opportunities but we added to our own downfall on all three goals.”
“West Brom play a system and they’ve got very good footballers and you know that there are going to be periods of the game where you are going to have to concede that they will have possession of the ball.”
“But you need to have a good enough shape that can cope with that and that means going through periods where you restrict the opportunities they have – but you then take your chances.”
“When we had chances, the game became an open game, we could have had goals but at that stage they had already scored two goals and had already had the lion’s share of possession, particularly in the first half.”
