Essien: I was rejected by Manchester United, twice

Michael Essien has admitted he was close to joining Manchester United on two occasions prior to his transfer to Chelsea, but was deemed to small for Premier League standards.

The Ghanaian midfielder went on to become one of the pillars of Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea, but everything could have been different if only Sir Alex Ferguson had made a better judgment.

“I had two trials at United, but I was seen as too small. I think Sir Alex was looking for a certain type of player and I wasn’t the one then,” said Essien.

Essien, nevertheless, reveals he is perfectly happy in London.

“I love the city of London, as there’s always something different to do.

“People are friendly here and they’ve always been good to me – that’s what I love about England.”
