(GSM) – A strong first-half performance gave Estudiantes hope of getting to the top of the Argentine Clausura after Friday’s 2-1 win over second-placed Godoy Cruz.

Red-hot striker Mauro Boselli bagged his eighth goal of the tournament – best in the competition – in the 13th minute when he tucked a shot beyond Godoy goalkeeper Nelson Ibáñez.

Then, in the 36th minute, defender Federico Fernández doubled the advantage to put the visitors on the backfoot.

Godoy fought hard to get back in the game, and they managed to pull a goal back five minutes from time when substitute César Carranza scored his second of the tournament.

But it was too little, too late, and the hopes of the visitors to gain a maiden title appeared dashed.

Estudiantes now sit in third, three points back of leaders Independiente, who are at Colón on Sunday.
