Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto’o has been crowned African Player of the Year for a record fourth time in Cairo on Monday.

The Cameroon goal sneak scored in Inter’s 3-0 win over Congolese side TP Mazembe in the Club World Cup final on Saturday, and was also a part of their treble-winning season last term, which included the Champions League.

Eto’o fended off first-time finalist and Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan and Chelsea’s Didier Drogbo to claim the award, moving him past three-time winners Abedi Pele and George Weah.

The 29-year-old won the top prize for three consecutive years between 2003 and 2005, and his most recent crown – which was presented at the annual CAF awards ceremony – adds to his award for being recognised as the best player at the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.

Eto’o also captained his country at the World Cup in South Africa this year, and despite goals against Denmark and the Netherlands, he could not save his nation from elimination at the group stage.

Club World Cup runners-up TP Mazembe were named African Club of the Year for their efforts in making the final in Abu Dhabi as champions of Africa.

Ghana were named African National Team of the Year after their heroics in reaching the quarter-finals in South Africa.
