With the exception of Portugal, Group F features teams that virtually nobody thought they would qualify for the tournament finals, with each of Austria, Hungary and Iceland now having a decent shot at securing their place in the next phase.
The Selecao are by far the strongest side in the group even if they have experienced some problems in recent years, with Paulo Bento eventually paying the price for the poor start of the qualifying campaign.
However, the team seriously raised their game under Fernando Santos and they not only qualified for the tournament finals, but also emerged as serious contenders for a place in the closing stages.
With the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani establishing a good attacking partnership and a number of hot Primeira Liga talents in the squad, Portugal should be a safe bet for the first place in the group.
Having said that, revived Austria will be looking to spoil their plans as Marcel Koller’s side are high on confidence after a near-perfect qualifying campaign and eager to finally prove their worth at a major tournament.
Das Team have suffered a dip in form of late, and they appear to be lacking the quality to match Portugal, but they are still the favourites to secure the second qualifying berth in Group F.
This is enough to suggest that Hungary and Iceland will be vying for the third position that could prove enough for a place in the next stage, and we give a small advantage to the Nordic side.
Iceland have beaten some of Europe’s best sides in the Euro 2016 qualifiers, they are incredibly disciplined and also boast some individual quality, and we don’t expect them to suffer from stage fright despite this being their first ever major tournament.
Hungary, on the other hand, achieved a third-place finish in by far the weakest group, and having been pretty fortunate to eliminate Norway in the play-offs, we don’t think they can show a massive improvement in France.
This does seem like one of the easiest groups to predict when it comes to teams most likely to finish top and bottom of the group, meaning you can take advantage of some decent odds before the tournament kicks off.
