Europa League: Manchester City 1 Dynamo Kiev 0

Ten-man Manchester City crashed out of the Europa League on aggregate despite beating Dynamo KIev 1-0 at Eastlands.

Mario Balotelli was sent off for the second time this season for another recklessly wild challenge yards from the referee and his assistant, which seemed to end their hopes of progressing to the last eight.

But they took lead on the night just two minutes with a thumping strike from Aleksandr Kolarov.

But the Blues did not quite have enough to overhaul the 2-0 defeat in Ukraine a week ago despite dominating possession as Kiev used their European experience and dogged defensive work to hang on for an aggregate 2-1 win.

Roberto Mancini started with a strong line-up with just one change from the side that secured a FA Cup semi-final with a win over Reading at the weekend – Gareth Barry replacing Patrick Vieira – while he was able to welcome back long-term casualties James Milner and Adam Johnson to the bench.

City attacked from the outside and Micah Richards created two chances inside the first five minutes with Carlos Tevez and Balotelli blasting off target.

In the 26th minute, Kolarov’s cross was half-cleared to David Silva whose first-time strike looked like it was heading for the top corner until it smacked Balotelli on the shoulder in the six-yard box.

The Italian was getting frustrated particularly after receiving a couple of niggly fouls from Kiev and he took his frustration out on Goran Popov in the 37th minute with a dangerous waist-high lunge, which deservedly earned him a red card.

But just over a minute later, City grabbed a goal with a 20-yard strike from Kolarov. Tevez was brought down by Atanda Yusuf and when Silva rolled the free-kick to Kolarov, the Serbian had plenty of time to take a touch and fire into the bottom corner.

City continued to march forward in the second half with Richards heading over from a Silva corner before the Spaniard drove at the Dynamo defence and saw his shot blocked at the last second.

With the extra man, the Ukrainians looked dangerous on the counter attack with Ognjen Vukojevic testing Joe Hart from long range and then Denys Garmash going close with a header that Nigel de Jong cleared off the line.

With 10 minutes to go, Kolarov had Kiev keeper Oleksandr Shovkovskyi scampering across his box to get a desperate hand to a deflected cross.

And in injury time, substitute Edin Dzeko did brilliantly to pull a high ball out of the sky and turn and shoot but his effort was well saved by Shovkovskiyi, who then clung on to Yaya Toure 25-yard free-kick.
