Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund were bundled out of the Europa League after they could only manage a 2-2 draw with Sevilla.
The German side needed to win in Spain on Wednesday in order to secure second spot in Group J behind Paris Saint-Germain, but they could not find a winner to send them through to the knockout stages.
Dortmund took the lead after just four minutes when Shinji Kagawa’s deflected shot beat Sevilla goalkeeper Andres Palop.
But goals from Christian Romaric and Freddie Kanoute within the space of four minutes had the hosts back ahead before half-time.
Neven Subotic equalised for Dortmund four minutes after the break to set up an exciting finish, but the Germans could not breach the Sevilla defence again.
In Group J’s other encounter, Paris-Saint Germain maintained their unbeaten record thanks to a 1-1 draw away to Ukrainian side Karpaty Lviv.
Elsewhere, Steaua Bucharest were left fuming after Edson Cavani’s injury time goal gave Napoli a 1-0 win and ended the Romanians’ European campaign.
Bucharest looked like they would be joining Liverpool as the qualifiers from Group K until Cavani’s late intervention sent Napoli through.
Tempers flared late on as the Italians pushed for a winner, with defender Fabio Cannavarro sent off and Steaua’s Iasmin Latovlevici forced off the ground with a cut above his eye.
A second-string Liverpool was held to a 0-0 draw by Utrecht in the other match in Group K.
In Group L, Porto and Besiktas both had comfortable wins to progress.
Porto beat CSKA Sofia 3-1 to cement top spot, while Besiktas defeated Rapid Vienna 2-0.
Villarreal claimed top spot in Group D after coming from a goal down to beat Club Brugge 2-1 in Belgium.
Brugge had gone ahead through Dorge Kouemaha’s 28th minute strike, but a double from Italian international Giuseppe Rossi within four minutes gave the Spaniards victory.
PAOK claimed the other spot in the final 32 with a hard fought 1-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia.
A 3-0 win over BATE Borisov was not enough for Dutch side AZ Alkmaar to make it into the knockout stages.
A Kolbein Sigthorsson double and a goal from Adam Maher won it for AZ, but BATE progress to the next round along with Group E leaders Dynamo Kiev, who drew 0-0 with Moldovan side Sherriff Tiraspol.
CSKA Moscow dropped its first points of the group stage after being held to a 1-1 draw with Sparta Prague in Group F.
Both sides were already guaranteed a spot in the round of 32, as goals from Alan Dzagoev and Vaclav Kadlec ensured the match finished even in Prague.
In the group’s other fixture, Palermo beat Swiss side Lausanne Sports 1-0 thanks to an 84th minute strike from Ezequiel Munoz.
