Europa League wrap: Wins for Newcastle, Atletico

Newcastle United and reigning UEFA Europa League champions Atletico Madrid won on Thursday while Liverpool slumped to a home defeat.

Alan Pardew’s Newcastle were terrific in a 3-0 win over Bordeaux at Sports Direct Arena, with strikers Shola Ameobi and Papiss Cisse getting on the scoresheet.

Yohan Cabaye went close in the early stages for the English Premier League outfit before a superb run from Gabriel Obertan allowed Ameobi to tap in the opener after just 16 minutes.

An own goal from Bordeaux centre-back Henrique just before half-time saw Newcastle double their lead and Cisse’s header, just four minutes into the second half, sealed the Group D win.

Atletico Madrid’s blushes were spared thanks to Cristian Rodriguez’s 92nd-minute winner, which saw them claim a 1-0 home triumph over Viktoria Plzen in Group B.

The hosts struggled to break down a resolute Czech side but Uruguayan Rodriguez produced a moment of individual brilliance to fire a 20-yard effort past a despairing Matus Kozacik in the Viktoria Plzen goal.

Liverpool took their tally of goals scored to 15 in their last five matches but it mattered little as Serie A outfit Udinese left Anfield with a 3-2 win in Group A.

Jonjo Shelvey – who netted a double in his side’s 5-3 win over Young Boys on matchday one – opened the scoring for Liverpool after 23 minutes.

Veteran striker Antonio Di Natale responded for Udinese just after half-time, before a Sebastian Coates own goal and a Giovanni Pasquale effort gave Francesco Guidolin’s side a two-goal advantage.

Luis Suarez was introduced off the bench and pulled a goal back for the Merseyside outfit, and he and Raheem Sterling had multiple efforts at goal in the dying stages, only to be denied by Udinese goalkeeper Zeljko Brkic.

Toche’s late equaliser saw Tottenham forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Panathinaikos in Group J, while first-half goals from Philippe Coutinho, Joel Obi and Marko Livaja helped Inter Milan to a 3-1 success against Neftci of Azerbaijan in Group H.

Ligue 1 table-toppers Marseille thumped AEL 5-1 in Group C with Loic Remy bagging a brace for the winners, while Stefan Kiessling’s 76th-minute effort was enough to give Bayer Leverkusen a 1-0 win in Rosenberg in Group K.

Raul Meireles and Dirk Kuyt were on the scoresheet as Fenerbahce won 4-2 at Borussia Moenchengladbach in Group C and Guieda Fofana’s brace – including a winner in the second minute of stoppage time – helped Lyon to a 4-3 win over Ironi Kiryat Shmona in Group I.

Ederson’s second-half goal led Lazio to a 1-0 success against Maribor in Group J and PSV eased to a 3-0 home win against Napoli in Group F.

Other Europa League results saw Anzhi Makhachkala defeat Young Boys 2-0, Club Brugge accounted for Maritimo by the same scoreline, Dinipro Dnipropetrovsk claimed a 3-2 win away to AIK and Sparta Prague defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-1.

Molde, Videoton and Rubin Kazan also claimed wins, while there were draws between Academia and Hapoel Tel Aviv, Basel and Genk, and Helsingborg’s clash with FC Twente.
