Barcelona remain five points clear of Real Madrid having played a game more after both teams had victories on Saturday.
The manner of the victories was very different however, with Barcelona needing a penalty from Ibrahimovic to see off struggling Espanyol at the Camp Nou, whilst Real had an excellent 3-2 win at top four side Valencia.
Higuain twice put Real ahead but goals from David Villa and Joaquin seemed to have given Valencia a point before Garay struck in the 83rd minute to take all three points back to the Bernabeu.
Sevilla remain in third place after a solitary Kanoute goal was enough to win at Sporting Gijon.
It was a strange weekend in Italy as leaders Inter could only manage a 1-1 draw at struggling Atalanta courtesy of a Milito goal, but increased their lead at the top to five points.
Whilst Inter were slightly misfiring second and third placed Milan and Juventus were both losing. Milan were beaten 2-0 at the San Siro by Palermo whilst Juventus went down 3-1 at Bari. Trezeguet scored the consolation for the men from Turin.
Fourth placed Parma closed the gap a little as they beat Bologna 2-1 with goals from Panucci and Amoruso.
At the bottom Catania are rock bottom after losing 1-0 to fellow strugglers Livorno.
Bayer Leverkusen’s lead in Germany has been cut to one point as they could only manage a 2-2 draw at bottom club Hertha Berlin. The Berlin side picked up only their sixth point of the season in a game in which Ramos gave them an early lead. They held on to the lead until fourteen minutes from the end when Kroos equalised for the leaders.
When Burak Kaplan put Leverkusen ahead in the last minute it looked to be all over but Ramos scored his second in injury-time to earn the home side a point.
Schalke remain second after Kuranyi and Moravek gave them a comfortable 2-0 win at Werder Bremen.
A point further back are Bayern Munich who hammered VfL Bochum 5-1 with Olic scoring twice and Gomez, Pranjic and an own goal completing the scoring.
FC Twente and PSV continue to battle it out at the top in Holland with Ajax and Feyenoord not too far behind. All four teams won again this weekend.
Twente lead by two points after they beat NAC 3-1 after being a goal down at half time. A brace from Stoch and a goal from Ruiz gave them the points.
PSV needed a late Toivonen goal to get a 1-0 win over champions AZ Alkmaar.
Suarez, De Jong and Donald gave Ajax a 3-0 win over NEC whilst Feyenoord just about stayed in touch thanks Hofland and Tomasson who gave them a 2-0 win at Heerenveen.
Bordeaux remain four points clear of Montpelier after they won 1-0 at Lyon. In a tight game a Chamakh goal after 86 minutes decided it.
Second placed Montpelier won 1-0 at Toulouse thanks to an early Camara goal.
Lille and Marseille remain locked on points in third and fourth place after they both had comfortable wins. Lille won 4-0 at ten man Monaco whilst Marseille won 2-0 at home to Boulogne who also had a man sent-off.
It is still a three horse race in Portugal between Braga, Porto and Benfica.
Braga are top on goal difference from Porto despite being held to a goalless draw at home to Naval. Farias and Varela gave Porto a 2-0 win over Vitoria Setubal.
Benfica are a point further back after they drew 2-2 at Olhanense. They had a goal from Saviola and one deep into injury-time from Nuno Gomes to thank for their point.
Celtic are two points clear of Rangers although they have played a game more. The leaders had a hard fought 3-2 win at Motherwell. Samaras, McGeady and Fortune were on target for the hoops.
Rangers had an easy 3-0 win over St Johnstone with goals from Novo and two more from the goal machine that is Kris Boyd.
Third placed Hibernian lost a little ground as they could only draw 1-1 at Kilmarnock.
Olympiakos are a point clear of Panathinaikos at the top and there is then a gap of ten points to the rest.
Both sides won again this week with Olympiakos winning 3-0 at home to Panthrakikos and Panathinaikos winning 1-0 at Iraklis.
Fenerbahce remain a point clear of Galatasaray after they both had 3-2 wins on Saturday.
Kayserispor and Besiktas remain hot on their heels although Besiktas could only manage a draw this week.
