Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has revealed his delight at scoring his first goal for the club in their 5-0 win over Wolves on Sunday.
The Northern Ireland international opened the scoring for United by volleying home Michael Carrick’s ball into the six-yard box.
It was the first time Evans had found the net since 2007, when he was on loan at Sunderland, and he was surprised to get his name on the scoresheet.
“Yeah, that (statistic) doesn’t sound too good. I’m just delighted with the goal,” Evans told MUTV.
“Michael Carrick put it on a plate for me really. There’s no point me having a celebration (planned). I just ran off and a few of the lads were laughing at the expression on my face.”
“It was pure relief and a bit of shock really. I’ve kept the shirt today and that will do for me.”
The United defender also hailed the performance of Antonio Valencia after the winger scored one and set-up Danny Welbeck for the third goal.
“He’s been superb all season. He’s been unbelievable actually. He’s got everything his locker,” Evans said.
“Him coming back was probably a bit of a gamble in terms of the fact he’s been out for a month or two but he’s such a hard worker, I’m sure he’s kept himself in really good shape.”
