(GSM) – Everton are after Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen. The Toffees have launched a first bid of €10m for the Belgium international, according to Dutch newspaper AD/Sportwereld.

Ajax has denied the first bid as they are desperate to keep Vertonghen at the Amsterdam Arena.

The Dutch giants sold Thomas Vermaelen to Arsenal last season and replaced the centre half with Vertonghen, who had an impressive season alongside countryman Toby Alderweireld.

AD/Sportwereld also claims Liverpool are interested in signing the 23-year-old defensive ace, who’s tied to Ajax until June 2013.
