Everton completed the signing of French defender Sylvain Distin from Portsmouth for an undisclosed fee on Friday.
Distin agreed a three-year contract after passing a medical at Goodison Park.
Toffees boss David Moyes moved for Distin as a replacement for England centre-back Joleon Lescott, who joined Manchester City for 24 million pounds (27.2 million euros) earlier this week.
Former Paris St Germain and Manchester City defender Distin could make his Everton debut in Sunday’s home match against Wigan.
“He’ll give me a centre half,” Moyes said. “I needed one before Joleon left and he’ll give me a direct replacement for him. He’s a left-footed centre back, which I wanted.
“He’s a bit older but more experienced and I look back at how well Davey Weir and Alan Stubbs did for us in their 30s, and I hope Sylvain can do the same.
“We need someone to come in and keep us steady because we want to be competing be at the top end of the Premier League.”
