Everton manager David Moyes Tuesday said he has withdrawn Australia star Tim Cahill from full training to help him recover from the World Cup before the English Premier League resumes.

Moyes said he would have preferred not to bring Cahill on the three-match promotional tour, which includes games against Sydney FC, Melbourne Heart and Brisbane Roar.

“I’d have preferred Tim to make sure he had a good holiday,” Moyes said.

“We’ve not asked him to train, just a little bit before the game to keep ticking over.

“I’ve just got to make sure I don’t feel the effects of Tim having no holiday in six or seven weeks’ time.”

Everton’s other players who were involved in the World Cup have all been given time off. Moyes said Cahill’s playing time would also be kept to a minimum on tour.

“I’ve tried every year to bring Everton to Australia and they keep talking about the flight and how far it is to come,” Cahill said.

“Now that they’re here, they’re loving it … and I don’t normally get to be on Australian soil, so to bring Everton here is an absolute pleasure.”

Everton play Melbourne Heart on Wednesday before facing Brisbane on Saturday. They won their opening match against Sydney FC 1-0 last weekend.
