Former Liverpool and Everton defender Gary Ablett died on Sunday at the age of 46 after a battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Ablett’s career began at Liverpool in 1983 and he spent nine years at Anfield before moving to the club’s fierce rivals Everton in 1992.
He played for Everton for four years, and is the only player to win the FA Cup with both Merseyside clubs.
Ablett made over 100 appearances for Birmingham late in his career, and he managed Stockport County from July 2009 until June 2010.
He joined the coaching staff at Ipswich Town in 2010, but was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma – a blood cancer – soon afterward.
“Respected throughout the game by players, coaches and managers alike, Gary will be sadly missed,” a statement from the League Manager’s Association read.
“The LMA’s thoughts and condolences are with Gary’s wife Jacqueline and children.”
