Former SuperSport United stars Katlego Mashego and Teko Modise scored against their former club as Orlando Pirates triumphed 2-0 Saturday in a South African FA Cup first round tie.
The result completed a memorable week for the 1995 African champions, who defeated Mamelodi Sundowns by the same score in midweek to stay hot on the heels of leaders SuperSport in the title race.
Ellis Park, venue for the opening match and final of the 2009 Confederations Cup during June, was once again packed as Pirates eventually outclassed United, who play an African Champions League qualifier in Uganda next weekend.
Striker Mashego and midfielder Modise also scored against Sundowns and the former should join his club team-mate in the national squad for a March 28 friendly against Norway in Rustenburg.
Mashego outpaced central defenders Morgan Gould and Bongani Khumalo four minutes before half-time and scored with a low shot across Ugandan goalkeeper Dennis Onyango into the far corner.
He turned creator for the second, passing to crowd favourite Modise, who unleashed an unstoppable shot from outside the penalty area that Onyango got a hand to but could not stop.
Shock of the opening seven matches came in the steamy northern town of Thohoyandou where struggling second-tier Black Leopards scored two minutes before full-time to win 1-0 against in-form Premiership side AmaZulu.
Sundowns, the ‘Chelsea’ of South African football with a wealthy owner and expensively assembled squad, trailed away to first division Carara Kicks before two goals from Surprise Moriri helped them to a 3-1 victory.
Platinum Stars edged Golden Arrows 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwean goalkeeper Tapiwa Kapini among those successful from the spot for the winners in the university town of Potchefstroom.
