EXCLUSIVE Video Interview: Spain’s David Villa pre-Euro 2008 talk (EN & ES)

This is our third and final pre-Euro 2008 interview, and we are proud to present to you a very exclusive interview with Valencia & Spain super striker David Villa. The Spanish striker will together with Liverpool’s Fernando Torres form probably the most lethal attack duo in the upcoming European Championships.

Villa discusses his own expectactions with the Euro 2008, Spain’s expectations of finally winning a big tournament, the strong and weak sides of the Spanish team, and their opponents in the group stages (Sweden, Russia and Greece). Enjoy this rare interview!

Dime tus expectativas de cara a la Euro que se viene?
Tell me your expectations about Euro that is about to begin.

Yo creo que son buenas. Individualmente yo creo que voy a llegar en un muy buen momento, pues, porque este año por culpa de las lesiones he tenido muchos menos partidos que los que suelo jugar de costumbre y colectivamente yo creo que también llegamos en un gran momento porque llevamos mucho tiempo sin perder, ganandole muchos partidos a grandes rivales por lo que esperamos hacer una gran Eurocopa.

I have good expectations. Individually, I believe that I will be reaching a very good moment, because this year I haven’t played many games due to my injuries – much less than I am used to play. And collectively I think we will be in a good shape as well since we haven’t lost for a long time, winning a lot of games against big teams. That is why we are expecting to do well in the Euro.

Son concientes que el mundo futbolístico le reclama a Epaña un título grande?
Are you conscious about that people in football are claiming Spain to win a big title?

Si, sí, está claro porque una de las mejores ligas del mundo es la que tenemos aquí. Hay jugadores muy buenos pero nunca conseguimos nada, entonces pues, sería importante ganar para quitarnos todo eso de encima y creo que este año sería bueno ganar la Euro para conseguir terminar con esa racha.

Yes, sure. It is obvious because it has one of the best leagues in the world. There are so many good players but we haven’t got any title at all. So it would be important for us to win a title to get the monkey off our bank. I believe that it would be wonderful to win the Euro this year to finish this run of bad luck.

Cuáles son las virtudes del seleccionado español?
What are the virtues of the Spanish national team?

Bueno, sobre todo trabajar en bloque, mantener a todo su bloque contento, porque todos los que estamos siendo convocados confiamos en él…..este es un equipo que tiene un gran mediocampo, tenemos la pelota y la tratamos bien, y bueno, creo que eso es lo importante.

Well, above all it is about working together, maintaining everyone happy because all the players that are called upon feel confident of the coach….This is the team that has a great midfield. Once we have the ball, we play it in a proper way. I think this is the most important.

Y los defectos?
What about the weak points?

Bueno, yo creo que todos tenemos defectos, pero no soy quien para enumerarlos….en realidad yo creo que hablamos demasiado en las ruedas de prensa y decimos lo que pensamos y eso no siempre es bueno,,,,,bah, en realidad no creo que ese sea un defecto, en todo caso puede ser una virtud y nada mas,,,,,lo único que esperamos es hacer una gran Eurocopa.

Well… I think that every team has weak points, but I am not the one who lists them…actually I think that we speak too much in press conference and say what we think. Sometimes it is not good…. Off course I don’t think it is a weak point, in such a case it can be a virtue and that is it…. The only thing we want is to have a good result in Euro.

España siempre llega como candidata a hacer buenos papeles, final o semifinal, pero generalmente no superan la primera fase…entonces,,,,,dónde está la falla, el defecto?

Spain is always considered as a favorite to reach the final or the semi finals in big tournaments, but in general you can’t pass the first round… so where do you think the defect?

Pues no lo sé,,,,,,,ese es un dato,,,,,nosotros no nos basamos en eso,,,,no pensamos que en años no hemos conseguido nada, sólo pesamos que lo podemos conseguir en este año y estamos confiados en que lo lograremos si vamos paso a paso.

Well I don’t know….that is a data….we are not based on that…we don’t think that we haven’t got anything in many years, we only believe that we can get the title this year and we are confident that we can do it if we go stable step by step.

Quienes crees que pueden ser los candidatos a ganar la Euro?
Who do you think can be the big favorites to win the Euro?

Bueno, es difícil, pero Francia, Italia y Alemania son los que todo el mundo da por favoritos…..Portugal, que es una selección muy buena y claro, siempre hay alguno que se cuela entre los favoritos. Yo creo que hay grandes selecciones, cualquiera puede hacer un buen papel y llegar hasta las finales. Esperemos que sea España la que lo consiga.

Well, it is difficult, but France , Italy and Germany are the ones that everyone thinks as favorites….Portugal is also a good team that is always getting in the favorites. I think that there are many good teams, so any team can do well and reach the final. I hope that will be Spain.

Cuánto pesa la historia en este tipo de competencia?….la historia de Italia, de Alemania?
How much does the history affect in this kind of tournament? … the history of Italy or Germany?

Pues sobre todo en esta Eurocopa esperemos que pese poco. Porque España no tiene mucha y los que has enumerado tienen bastante.

Well in this Euro I hope that the history won’t affect at all. Because Spain doesn’t have much history and the ones that you have just mentioned have a lot.

Ves algún equipo que no sea grande en condiciones de repetir lo que hizo Grecia en 2004?
Do you see any team not big one that has conditions to repeat what Greece did in 2004?

Yo creo que cualquiera, ya he dicho que cualquier equipo puede aspirar a hacerlo, porque hay grandes selecciones pese a que tengan menos nombres, pero bueno, no te puedo dar un nombre. Todos pueden aspirar a jugar la final.

I think that any team can do it. I already mentioned that any team has chances to make it happen because there are many good teams although they have fewer players with big names. So I can not tell you one team. Every team is able to reach the final.

Con qué rival no te gustaría enfrentarte en ninguna fase de la Europa?
Which rival you would not like to play against in any stage in Euro?

Bueno,,,,ehhhhh….mmmm…….quizá Italia…..Italia al que le ganamos un amistoso tiempo atrás….es la actual campeona del mundo……es muy complicado siempre jugar frente a Italia.

Well….ehhhh….mmmm…..Maybe Italy….Italy that we won in a friendly match …. they are the actual champions of the world….It is always very tough to play against Italy.

Háblame de los rivales que tendrán en la primera fase de la competencia
Tell me about your rivals that you play against in the first round?

Si,,,bueno….Suecia, ya nos hemos enfrentado a ellos durante la fase de clasificación y sabemos de lo que pueden ser capaces, sobre todo con su figura clave que es Ibrahimovic…..Grecia es la última campeona de Europa,,,tiene un gran conjunto, con un bloque muy compacto que te puede complicar mucho las cosas y Rusia, que es la menos conocida, pero que si ha eliminado a Inglaterra es por algo, porque casualidades en el fútbol se dan poquitas y el hecho de eliminar a Inglaterra ya habla por si sola.

Yes…Sweden who we played against already in the pre eliminatory round so we know what they can do, above all with their key player Ibrahimovic…. Greece is the last champion of Euro…they have a good team playing compact that can cause you a problem. And Russia to whom we have less information but they eliminated England so they must have something because things don’t happen accidentally that much in football. Eliminating England is already a big thing.

Hablando con jugadores de otros seleccionados europeos, casi todos dan como candidata a España a ganar la Euro. Esto es un peso para ustedes?
Talking with players from other European teams, almost everyone considers Spain as a favorite to win the Euro. Is it a pressure for you?

No. Yo creo que eso pasa porque desde fuera se ve que España trata muy bien el balón, que tiene grandes jugadores y que lógicamente puede hacer un gran fútbol. Pero nosotros no nos tenemos que meter presión,,,,sólo debemos ir paso a paso. Queremos llegar hasta el fial pero primero debemos eliminar a los tres rivales del grupo.

No, I think that people say that because we are good at controlling the ball. We have very good players and off course we can play a good football. But we should not put pressure on ourselves … what we have to do is to go step by step. We want get to the final but at first we have to eliminate the three teams in the first round.

Para finalizar, dime que es lo primero que se te viene a la cabeza cuando recuerdas el lugar en el que naciste?
Before we finish, tell me a little bit about your memories in your birth place.

Bueno, mis amigos y yo jugando en la pista del colegio…..la pista es una canchita de fútbol 5 que es donde jugábamos siempre. Era donde pasábamos todo el día jugando.

Well, my friends and I used to play in the track of school…the track is a small field of Futsal where we used to play all the time. That is the place where we used to spend the time playing all day long.

Tu película favorita y la canción que mas te gusta?
Your favorite movie and song?

Mi película favorita es Braveheart…..la de Mel Gibson y mi canción favorita,,,,,no sabría decirte una, porque me gusta mucho la música, pero en este momento no se me ocurre que decirte.

My favorite movie is BraveHeart … the one by Mel Gibson and my favorite song is … I can’t tell you one, because I like music, but at this moment I can’t choose one.

O algún grupo o banda de música?
Or any group o band?

Si…grupo me gusta El Ültimo de la Fila o ahora Manolo García en solitario. Es un grupo que me ha gustado de toda la vida.
