Manchester United lifted the Community Shield for the 19th time after their pulsating, comeback victory over Manchester City 3-2 on Sunday.

Portuguese winger Nani was the hero for United, scoring two brilliant goals – including a mercurial injury-time effort to seal the win.

Earlier, City went ahead through a Joleon Lescott header on 38 minutes, and their lead was doubled when Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko fired a 30-yard cracker past a diving David de Gea to give the Blues a 2-0 lead at the break.

But United typically fought back into the contest, pulling a goal back through Chris Smalling, who volleyed home an Ashley Young free-kick in the 52nd minute.

Nani then equalised six minutes later, chipping past City’s custodian Joe Hart to finish off some sublime passing from United’s front men.

Both sides had clear chances to find a winner, with de Gea saving a bullet header from Steve Richards late on, while United went forward in the 90th minute, only for Nani’s powerful strike to be blocked by Lescott.

But it was that man Nani again who provided the late heroics, as he charged down defender Vincent Kompany, who was attempting to control a high-bouncing Wayne Rooney clearance from a City corner.

Nani smothered Kompany’s touch, and then charged down the pitch, rounding goalkeeper Hart, and firing United to the trophy.
