FA Cup and Premier League predictions – United to the top and Reading to cause a shock?

More celebrations for Reading?

More celebrations for Reading?

Saturday 6th March

FA Cup Quarter-Finals

  • Fulham v Tottenham
  • This is a tough one to call. On paper, you would have to fancy Tottenham but only a foolish person writes off this Fulham team under Roy Hodgson.

Tottenham are currently fourth in the Premier League whilst Fulham are ninth, but make no mistake, Fulham are a tough team to beat.

I think there will be one surprise result in the FA Cup this weekend but I don’t quite think it will be in this one. Tottenham will go through, but it’ll take a replay.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-1

  • Portsmouth v Birmingham
  • Crisis club Portsmouth find themselves just two games away from a Cup Final. Of course, last time they made it there it turned out to be the start of very bad times for them. I don’t think they need to worry about that this time because they aren’t going to get there.

Pompey found a win last week and showed that they can actually do it. Unfortunately for them, Birmingham are still a team in form. I expect Alex McLeish to take his men through to the semi-final. I think like Tottenham, they will need a replay to get there.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-1

    Premier League

  • Arsenal v Burnley
  • A very good Arsenal team take on a very bad Burnley team. There is only one possible winner in this game and trust me, Brian Laws won’t be celebrating.

If you thought Burnley had any chance at all in this game then a glance at yesterday’s Sun newspaper would have put you right. In it was an article where Brian Laws was saying that the return of thirty-eight year old Graham Alexander from injury was great news for him because he could keep Cesc Fabregas quiet. Oh dear.

    SoccerNews prediction: 3-0

  • West Ham v Bolton
  • This is a game between two teams who last weekend managed to edge a little way away from the drop zone. Neither of them are safe and a defeat for either here will leave them in trouble. Having said that, a win could create a comfortable gap.

Owen Coyle has not transformed Bolton but he has made them difficult to score against. West Ham find it difficult to score. For that reason, I reckon this one will remain goalless.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-0

  • Wolves v Manchester United
  • Much like the Arsenal against Burnley game we have another fixture here where a good team is playing a bad team and there is only one possible outcome.

Wolves are clinging to Premier League safety by the skin of their teeth at the moment. Their only hope is that Portsmouth, Hull and Burnley keep losing, because I don’t see them picking up too many more points.

Through no great effort on their part, United have found themselves back within a point of leaders Chelsea at the top and they know they will go top with a win here. They won’t pass up that opportunity.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-2

    Sunday 7th March

    FA Cup Quarter-Finals

  • Chelsea v Stoke
  • Stoke would not have been the team that Chelsea wanted to draw at this stage of the cup because whatever happens, they know they will have to be at their best to match Stoke physically and to withstand the aerial onslaught they will face.

Chelsea are one of the few teams that probably can match Stoke physically and that fact, together with the fact that they are a vastly superior football team, should be enough to see them through.

    SoccerNews prediction: 2-0

  • Reading v Aston Villa
  • Aston Villa will still be down after their Wembley defeat last week. This is another chance to get back there, but losing a final is always a demoralising occasion.

Reading have found some form in the Championship and they have already seen off Premier League Liverpool and Burnley and Championship high flyers West Brom.

If there is going to be a shock result, this is where it will happen.

    SoccerNews prediction: 2-1

    Premier League

  • Everton v Hull
  • Everton have lost their last two games but there is no doubt they are a good and improving side. Hull have lost their last two games but there is no doubt…oh yes there is.

Everton to win at a canter.

    SoccerNews prediction: 3-1
