FA Cup wrap: 10-goal thriller at Orient

Leyton Orient conjured up an unbelievable six extra-time goals to stun Droylsden 8-2 in their FA Cup second-round replay on Tuesday.

Incredibly, non-league club Droylsden led 2-0 with 16 minutes left in regulation time before Orient then piled on eight unanswered goals to secure a third-round tie with Championship side Norwich City.

Jonathan Tehoue and Scott McGleish each nabbed a hat-trick for the League One outfit, whose superior match fitness was too much for an exhausted Droylsden as the tie entered extra time.

Ciaran Kilheeney, who opened the scoring in the initial 1-1 tie between the two sides, repeated the dose in the sixth minute with a close-range strike from Jody Banim’s cross.

Orient defender Terrell Forbes saw red for a poor challenge on Banim in the 37th minute, and when Alex Brown put the visitors further ahead in the 54th minute Droylsden were on course to steal an upset victory.

But Liam Brownhill sparked Orient to life when he brought down on-loan Tottenham winger Paul-Jose Mpoku with a needless foul inside the box in the 77th minute, with Ben Chorley converting the resultant penalty kick to make it 2-1.

Droylsden midfielder Nathaniel Kerr was dismissed soon after and Tehoue nabbed an 89th-minute equaliser to send the game into extra time.

Tempers flared early in the added period as Chorley and Lee Roche were sent off for second cautions, leaving both sides down to nine men.

Mpoku broke the part-timers’ will when he fired Orient in front after 92 minutes, and McGleish – who nabbed the equaliser to deny Droylsden in their initial meeting – scored four minutes later.

McGleish and Tehoue then piled another two goals apiece in the ensuing rout, bringing Droylsden’s Cup campaign to an undignified end.

Meanwhile, non-league outfit Crawley Town came from behind to upset Swindon Town 3-2 in extra time and advance to a meeting with Championship side Derby County.

Crawley took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute through Ben Smith, but Jon-Paul McGovern equalised for the League One club two minutes later.

Charlie Austin then put Swindon ahead in the 41st minute, but his goal was cancelled out when goalkeeper Phil Smith put through his own goal on 69 minutes.

Smith’s error bought Crawley another 30 minutes to find a winner, and Ben Smith proved the hero in the 118th minute with his second goal of the game.

Three other second-round replays – Hartlepool United versus Yeovil Town, Hereford United at Lincoln City and Notts County versus AFC Bournemouth – were postponed due to poor weather.
