There was to be no fairytale for Macclesfield in this year’s FA Cup as Bolton won 2-0 at the Reebok Stadium.
Two first-half goals in Tuesday’s replay were enough for Owen Coyle’s men to earn a home fourth-round tie against Swansea City.
It could barely have started any worse for the visitors, as they conceded in 34 seconds after a dreadful error from young right-back John Bateson.
Bateson, who appeared to have enough time to clear, slipped after a mis-kick, allowing Ivan Klasnic to cross for Kevin Davies to prod home from close range.
It was no surprise when Bolton made it two.
Tuncay Sanli, who had failed to slip in Martin Petrov just minutes earlier, this time provided a lovely pass for the Bulgarian winger to run onto.
Petrov then surprised Jose Veiga with an early strike which curled beyond the Cape Verde international at his near post.
Elsewhere, QPR earned a home tie with Chelsea after overcoming a dogged and determined MK Dons side in their third-round replay at Loftus Road.
The only goal of the game came in the 73rd minute courtesy of a Danny Gabbidon header, his first since March 2005, from a Shaun Wright-Phillips corner.
The goal also ended a long drought for QPR – it was their first victory of any kind in the FA Cup since 2001.
Championship sides Millwall and Leicester both had big wins at home.
Millwall crushed Dagenham & Redbridge 5-0, while Leicester thrashed Nottingham Forest 4-0.
Darius Henderson scored a hat-trick for Millwall, with Harry Kane bagging a brace.
Millwall’s last three goals came in a six-minute period midway through the second half to kill off Dagenham’s hopes and earn a home tie against Championship leaders Southampton.
Jermaine Beckford also grabbed a hat-trick and Forest defender George Boateng scored an own goal after seven minutes as Leicester booked a home game against Swindon Town.
