Charlton Athletic booked their spot in the second round of the FA Cup after a 4-0 win at Halifax Town on Sunday.
Charlton, who top League One and therefore entered the match as the highest-ranked side in the competition, were made to work hard for their win and it was only three goals in the last 10 minutes that added gloss to the overall scoreline.
The Conference North outfit welcomed nearly 5,000 fans into The Shay in West Yorkshire for the cup-tie, but despite a strong initial showing, the home fans headed for the break slightly disappointed after Matthew Taylor’s goal on 40 minutes.
Halifax kept on fighting, however, and they did not make it easy for Chris Powell’s side, who entered the match on the back of four successive wins.
Johnnie Jackson’s goal with 10 minutes remaining effectively killed off the tie and Danny Hollands and substitute Bradley Pritchard also bagged late goals, sandwiched in between Halifax defender Danny Lowe’s straight red card.
Charlton will now host Carlisle United in the second round.
