Oldham Athletic have won their way through to the third round of the FA Cup with a dream trip to Liverpool awaiting them.
Oldham defeated Southend United 1-0 at Boundary Park on Tuesday in a second-round replay to book their visit to Anfield, thanks to Chris Taylor’s second-half goal.
After a 1-1 draw in the second-round proper, Southend lost two matches in succession and their poor form continued with another defeat.
Paul Sturrock’s side were reduced to 10 men after just 38 minutes when Tunisian defender Bilel Mohsni received a second yellow card.
And Oldham made the numerical advantage count on 58 minutes with Taylor’s strike.
Conference outfit Fleetwood Town will also be excited about their third-round draw, with Championship side Blackpool set to visit Park Avenue.
Fleetwood booked their progression into the third round with a 2-0 win at Yeovil Town of League One in a match that both sides ended with 10 men.
Jamie McGuire scored after 28 minutes for Fleetwood and Yeovil – who were at home – were reduced to 10 men when Bondz N’Gala was given a second yellow card.
Fleetwood had Steve McNulty sent off with five minutes to go though, leading to a frantic finale.
But it was Fleetwood who held firm, with Jamie Vardy scoring two minutes into injury time.
Other matches saw Salisbury City win 3-2 after extra time at Grimsby Town, while Dagenham and Redbridge defeated Walsall in a penalty shootout after they played out a goalless stalemate over 120 minutes.
