FA Cup wrap: United defeat Liverpool, Chelsea hit seven

Manchester United ruined Kenny Dalglish’s first game back in charge of Liverpool with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford in the third round of the FA Cup.

Ryan Giggs blasted home a penalty in just the second minute after striker Dimitar Berbatov was brought down by Daniel Agger, although replays suggested contact was minimal and the Bulgarian certainly made the most of the incident.

Despite the protests of the Liverpool players, referee Howard Webb pointed to the spot and Giggs slammed the ball past Pepe Reina into the top right-hand corner.

Any realistic hopes of Liverpool mounting a comeback were snuffed out after 32 minutes when their captain Steven Gerrard was shown a straight red card for a two-footed lunge on Michael Carrick.

In the day’s shock result, Manchester City were held to a 2-2 draw at The Walkers Stadium by Leicester City – the club of former boss Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Souleymane Bamba gave Leicester the lead inside the first minute when he poked the ball past Joe Hart after a corner, before strikes to James Milner and Carlos Tevez gave City a 2-1 edge at half-time.

But a dreadful blunder from Hart – in which he fumbled a Paul Gallagher cross to allow Andy King to score an equaliser – secured Leicester a replay at Eastlands.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Chelsea bounced back well from their poor run of recent form with a 7-0 drubbing of Championship side Ipswich at Stamford Bridge.

It was a miserable way for Ipswich’s caretaker boss Ian McParland to start his tenure, having been handed the reins following Roy Keane’s sacking on Thursday.

A brace each from Frank Lampard and Daniel Sturridge, singles to Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou and an own-goal from Carlos Edwards did the damage for the Londoners.

The strength of the showing may have bought embattled manager Carlo Ancelotti some breathing space ahead of talks with owner Roman Abramovich this week.

And Tottenham booked their place in the fourth round with a 3-0 win over League One outfit Charlton Athletic.

Andros Townsend put Spurs ahead four minutes after half-time with an excellent long-range strike on debut, and Jermain Defoe doubled their advantage after 58 minutes before adding his second two minutes later to seal the win.
