FA investigate ´handcuff´ goal celebration

Ipswich's David Norris could face disciplinary action for a controversial goal celebration after the Football Association confirmed Monday they had written to the midfielder.

Norris seemed to make a 'handcuff' gesture in support of his jailed former Plymouth team-mate Luke McCormick after scoring in Ipswich's 1-0 victory away to Blackpool in the second-tier Championship on Saturday.

McCormick is currently serving a sentence of seven years and four months for causing the deaths of Arron Peak, 10, and his brother Ben, eight, in a car accident when he was under the influence of alcohol earlier this year on his way home from Norris's wedding.

“We are aware of the incident and have written to Ipswich to seek an explanation from David Norris for his actions and await his response,” an FA spokesman said.

Norris, 26, told Monday's Daily Mirror: “It wasn't a handcuff sign, it was a private message but I can see why people have seen it like that.

“I apologise if anyone was offended by it.

“Luke is a friend who made a massive mistake and he is paying for that.”

Mrs Peak, from Manchester, told the Mirror the gesture was insulting.

She said: “I'm disgusted. To celebrate a goal like that is disrespectful to me and my husband and my boys. He should be given a ban by his club.

“Norris is doing this in front of thousands of supporters, including children, and sending out the wrong message that we can drink and drive and it's OK to kill someone.”
