Liverpool’s Ryan Babel has landed himself in hot water after posting negative comments about referee Howard Webb after their FA Cup loss to Manchester United.
The Football Association will investigate Babel’s rant on Twitter, which also included a digitally altered photo of Webb wearing a Manchester United shirt, implying bias had played a part in his decision to award the home side a penalty in the first minute and the sending-off of Reds captain Steven Gerrard.
Posting on his official Twitter page after the game, Babel wrote: “And they call him one of the best referees. That’s a joke.”
The 24-year-old later apologised via the same medium for his actions.
“My apology if they take my posted pic seriously. This is just a emotional reaction after losing an important game,” Babel wrote.
“Sorry Howard Webb !” another tweet said.
Webb awarded a controversial penalty in the first minute when Dimitar Berbatov appeared to dive and also sent Gerrard off in the first half.
The Dutch international is expected to front a disciplinary hearing and could face a ban.
