Fortuna Dusseldorf goalkeeper Fabian Giefer will be joining Schalke at the end of the current campaign, club official Helmut Schulte has revealed.
The Miners were believed to be on the verge of agreeing a deal for the talented shot-stopper, but the two clubs attempted to keep the agreement a secret.
However, Fortuna Dusseldorf manager Helmut Schulte has accidentally confirmed the agreement has been made.
“Fabian Giefer will leave the club for Schalke 04,” Schulte said at a press conference.
The 23-year-old will be out of contract in June and it is now clear he will be joining the Miners on a free transfer.
Giefer is widely regarded as one of the most talented goalkeepers in Germany’s second division and it appears he is set for a Bundesliga return.
The 23-year-old started all 34 league matches for Fortuna in the top flight last season, but he could not help the club avoid relegation to the second division.
