Fabianski credits Olympiakos desire

Lukasz Fabianski knew Arsenal were in for a tough time despite being forced off early in his team’s 3-1 loss to Olympiakos on Tuesday.

Arsenal had already secured passage to the next round of the Champions League going into their final Group F match at the Karaiskaki Stadium.

Goals from Rafik Djebbour, David Fuster and Francois Modesto secured all three points for the Greek hosts, with Yossi Benayoun netting for Arsenal.

Fabianski was substituted after just 25 minutes, following a nasty collision with team-mate Thomas Vermaelen.

But despite his premature departure, the Poland international goalkeeper believes it was clear from the start that Olympiakos were keen to secure the three points.

“I can only talk about the time I was on pitch because afterwards I didn’t see anything,” he said.

“You could see that Olympiakos were really up for it and they were pushing hard. The first goal we conceded was a bit unlucky because it went off our defender.”

“We could have maybe come back in a different way but unfortunately we didn’t and that’s how it finished.”

The 26-year-old was positive about the injury he sustained during the match, and is hopeful of a quick return to availability.

“I think I am fine, it’s just a really deep cut,” he said.

“It was really unlucky but hopefully all the ligaments in my knee should be OK. Hopefully nothing will come out tomorrow or in the next couple of days.”
