France international defender Rod Fanni is set to sign for champions Marseille from French league rivals Rennes, sources close to the player and club revealed on Wednesday.
Marseille have been on the lookout for a replacement for Cesar Azpilicueta who badly damaged his cruciate ligaments in his left knee and feel the 29-year-old Fanni would fit the bill.
Fanni arrived in Marseille on Wednesday evening and is due to sign the three-year contract worth an estimated four million euros on Thursday and could make his debut against Lyon at the Velodrome at the weekend.
The Marseille-born defender joined Rennes in 2007 from Nice.
“I come from this part of the country, Marseille represents a lot for me. As a kid I wore the Marseille jersey. I’m happy to be here,” said Fanni, who added that the chance to play Champions League football had weighed heavily in his decision.
