Schalke winger Jefferson Farfan could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after an MRI scan confirmed the extent of his knee injury.
The Peru international had been diagnosed with a lateral ligament tear after sustaining the injury in his country’s 2-0 defeat to Ecuador in last Tuesday’s CONMEBOL 2014 World Cup qualifier.
Sunday’s scan revealed that Farfan has a partial tear in his the medial ligament in his left knee.
It remains unclear as to how long Schalke coach Huub Stevens will be without the 27-year-old, who will consult a knee specialist to determine the best course of treatment.
Farfan has scored two goals in his nine Bundesliga outings this season.
