Fatigue no excuse for England´s Terry

England captain John Terry refused to use fatigue as an excuse after his side were held 2-2 at home to Switzerland on Saturday.

The hosts needed Frank Lampard’s penalty and an equaliser from substitute Ashley Young to take a point from the Euro 2012 qualifying match at Wembley Stadium.

England coach Fabio Capello attributed the disappointing result to a lack of energy to a long English Premier League season.

But centre-back Terry said the condition of the squad should not have influenced the outcome of the match.

“No not at all, we’re certainly not going to come out here and use an excuse like that,” Terry said.

“We’ve played 50 or 60 games this year so another game isn’t going to make a difference at all.”

The England defence and goalkeeper Joe Hart were culpable after conceding twice from speculative Tranquillo Barnetta free kicks.

But Terry does not want Hart or his defensive colleagues singled out for blame.

“Listen, we’re disappointed as a team, it’s not about individuals making mistakes,” he said.

“We’re out there together and we’ll win together and lose together but I thought the way we played together in the second half was quite encouraging and I thought we had enough chances to go on and win the game 3-2 or even 4-2.”

“Other days they will go in and other days they don’t so we didn’t get the luck we deserved today. (There are) three games left and we’re hoping to win all three.”

The draw leaves England level with Montenegro on 11 points at the top of Group G, with both nations having three matches of the qualifying campaign left to come.

The final fixture is a potentially decisive trip to face Montenegro in Podgorica, but Aston Villa forward Young is confident the team will still make next year’s finals.

“On a different day the other chances we created, they would have gone in but it wasn’t meant to be and we have to dust ourselves off. When we come back for the season we’ve got massive games coming up,” Young said.

“We’ve definitely got winnable games coming up so we go out to win every game, but like I say (there are) quite a few points to play for and that is what we have to focus on now.”
