Ferdinand left out of United squad

Rio Ferdinand has not been named in Manchester United’s squad to face Otelul Galati in Tuesday’s Champions League clash in Romania.

The centre-back completed 90 minutes in Saturday’s Premier League match with Liverpool with no sign of injury, but Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Nemanja Vidic will be the options at the heart of defence in the forthcoming Group C encounter.

Ferdinand was previously left out for United’s first Champions League away fixture this season against Benfica as a precautionary measure, with the England international having suffered a hamstring injury in their opening Premier League game against West Brom.

Midfielder Tom Cleverley, who recently signed a new four-year contract with the Red Devils, is yet to return from his ankle injury.

Manchester United squad: Amos, De Gea, Lindegaard; Evans, Evra, Fabio, Jones, Smalling, Vidic; Anderson, Carrick, Fletcher, Giggs, Nani, Park, Young, Valencia; Berbatov, Diouf, Hernandez, Owen, Rooney, Welbeck
