(GSM) – Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson expects goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar to retire at the end of the season.

Despite being one of the top goalkeepers of the Premier League, the Dutchman celebrated his 40th birthday earlier this year, and Ferguson feels this campaign could be the keeper’s last.

“We are planning for this being his last season,” Ferguson said.

Van der Sar has enjoyed a distinguished career, winning the Champions League twice and playing at top clubs such as Ajax, Juventus and Manchester United.

Ferguson agrees with recent suggestions that van der Sar’s experience would make him a good coach once he hangs up his boots.

“We have not discussed it,” he said. “But Edwin is a player who would be of interest in terms of his knowledge and standing in the game.”
