With the January transfer window set to open next week, Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that he is perfectly happy with Manchester United’s squad.
The Scottish boss confirmed that he would only pursue signing a top player if the opportunity presented itself.
United’s midfield has suffered countless injuries in the last few weeks, with Ashley Young, Darren Fletcher, Anderson, and Tom Cleverley set to miss more time.
However, the club’s most devastating setback was losing skipper Nemanja Vidic for the season with ligament damage to his knee.
As a result, the Red Devils may be forced into splurging in January due to the several injury woes surrounding Old Trafford.
“All things being equal I am perfectly happy with the strength of our squad in terms of depth, quality and age range,” said Fergie.
“I will not be swayed by the endless tweets and blogs urging the club to get busy in the transfer market next month.
“As far as I am concerned I am marching perfectly in step, true to my beliefs and principles. While recruiting some of the world’s leading players can lift you into contention for honours, it doesn’t necessarily take you all the way, as I hope we will be able to demonstrate before the end of the season as other factors come into play.
“You can never say never in football, of course, because fortunes can fluctuate wildly – that’s the football world. If a really top-class player became available, then we would go for him, or if we picked up any further serious injuries, it might be important to add to our squad.”
Manchester United vs. Wigan Athletic
United will face Wigan Athletic on Monday and Sir Alex had nothing but praise for Roberto Martinez and his side ahead of the 26 December clash.
“I watched Wigan versus Chelsea the other day and I thought Wigan were terrific,” Sir Alex told reporters.
“It says a lot for Roberto Martinez – he continues to play good football irrespective of what position they’re in.
“We have a good record against Wigan but we won’t take anything for granted. We need to keep out foot on the pedal.”
United are currently second place in the Premier League table, sitting two points behind “noisy neighbours” Manchester City, while Wigan are in the bottom three, but Ferguson does not believe that the Latics will be relegated in May.
“I don’t think they’re a relegation team – they do well against the bigger teams,” said Fergie.
“Last year, I think they lost heavily to Chelsea [6-0 at the DW Stadium] and, this season, they got a draw and could have won.
“I think Wigan will stay in the Premier League.”
