Ferguson backs Capello on Terry defence

Sir Alex Ferguson has publicly backed England boss Fabio Capello after the Italian spoke out against John Terry’s removal as captain.

The FA decided to strip Terry of the England captaincy on Friday after it was announced that his court case for allegedly racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand had been adjourned until after Euro 2012.

Capello drew the ire of the FA by going on record to say he disagreed with the decision and still thought of Terry as his captain.

And Manchester United boss Ferguson believes the Italian was not wrong in expressing his opinion and reiterated his belief that the manager is the most important figure in a football club.

“There’s nothing wrong with having an opinion,” Ferguson told Sky Sports News.

“I think what will happen in the next few days is there will have to be a coming together of the Football Association hierarchy and Fabio Capello because he’s the team manager and the importance over the position.”

“Without question the most important person at a football club is the manager, no question about it.”

Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart are considered the leading contenders to replace Terry as captain.
