Ferguson bemoans ´harsh´ Vidic red

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson claims Nemanja Vidic’s sending off during Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Otelul Galati was ‘very harsh’.

After a sluggish first half, United claimed all three points in the Champions League clash as two penalties from Wayne Rooney moved them into second place in Group C.

But the victory was marred by a straight red for Vidic after United’s first goal for a lunge on Gabriel Giurgiu.

“He’s raised his foot and in the context of referee’s interpretation, especially in Europe, I can see why he’s given the red card, but it’s very harsh I think,” Ferguson told Sky Sports.

When asked whether United would appeal the dismissal, the Scot added: “I don’t think you can win these things.”

Ferguson was delighted with the performance of Wayne Rooney, who he restored to the starting line-up after being used as a substitute in Saturday’s Premier League draw with Liverpool.

“Wayne Rooney played more in midfield, the first (half) but he played further up the field which created a problem for them, particularly with the example of the first goal in which he got in behind them, it was probably the first time we got in behind them and got the penalty kick,” Ferguson said.

“He had composure and took his penalties well, we could have won by more, but the game was coasting along until we got the man sent off, it was disappointing that, because there was no way back for them after that.”

The result was United’s first win of the group stage, and Ferguson hopes it will help his side build momentum after an erratic start to their European campaign.

“Well, we won and that’s the important thing, I said all along that if we win our next two games, the head-to-heads,” Ferguson added.

“Obviously Basel have to go to Benfica now and it’s not easy there, of course as we know ourselves, so I think the important thing is for us to do our job at Old Trafford, hopefully we can win that and that’s us on eight points and I’ve always said that ten points gets you through.”
