Dimitar Berbatov is not leaving Manchester United.
That’s the message from manager Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Manchester City.
Despite Berbatov’s 20 goals last season, his absence from United’s Champions League final defeat to Barcelona sparked rumours he could leave Old Trafford.
Ferguson’s side warmed up for the Wembley clash with an open training session at Old Trafford.
Fans got a glimpse of new signings Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea as Sir Alex prepares for another title charge.
They all expect to be involved in North London but one player who won’t be available is striker Javier Hernandez who continues to recover from concussion.
Joining Hernandez on the treatment table is Michael Carrick and full-back Rafael, whose minor injuries will not be risked.
After the traditional season curtain-raiser, Ferguson will see a number of his stars leave for midweek international duty.
Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Young will be back at Wembley for England’s friendly with the Netherlands on Wednesday.
Ferguson will be hoping for no further injury scares with the English Premier League opener at West Brom four days later.
United have not lost on the opening day since the 2004/05 season when they were defeated by Chelsea.
