Darren Ferguson, the son of Manchester United boss Sir Alex, was dismissed on Tuesday as manager of Championship side Peterborough.

The 37-year-old Ferguson junior has impressed as a manager in his own right with Peterborough, guiding the club to successive promotions since taking over at London Road in January 2007.

But Saturday’s 3-1 defeat away to Newcastle, leaders of the second-tier Championship, the division below the lucrative English Premier League, left Peterborough bottom of the table with just two wins from 16 games.

And a Peterborough statement issued on Tuesday said: “Following a series of meetings with the manager, Peterborough United and Darren Ferguson have decided to part company with immediate effect by mutual consent.

“The football club would like to thank Darren for his magnificent service during his time at London Road and wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

English managers Peter Taylor and Steve Coppell have already been touted as candidates to succeed Ferguson at Peterborough.
