Ferguson to make Rooney call

The 25-year-old has not played since United’s 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion on October 16, and has been in the United States in a bid to regain full fitness.

With Rooney now back in England, Ferguson said he would wait and see how the striker got through training this week before making a decision to include him for Saturday’s English Premier League match with Wigan at Old Trafford.

“Wayne has had a good week in Oregon. He’s done well,” Ferguson told the Aspire4Sport Conference in Doha, Qatar. “Now, he’s back and he will train today.”

“We have to assess if he is ready to get into the first team. That is an area which I couldn’t give you an answer to because the only evidence we will have is on the training field and I’ll see that tomorrow.”

Ferguson also weighed in on the furore that erupted in October when the England international expressed a desire to leave United before being persuaded to stay put and inking a new five-year deal.

Ferguson believes Rooney may have been led astray by his agent, Paul Stretford.

“Some young people today take bad advice,” Ferguson said.

“He’s got an agent who is not the most popular man in the world, certainly not at our club. But there’s nothing wrong with making a mistake as long as you recognise it.”

“He has apologised and signed a new contract. I think what we want is Wayne back to his best. When that happens I think everyone will be OK.”
