Atletico Madrid striker is reportedly close to a surprising summer switch to Mexican side Cruz Azul according to Spanish media outlet Marca.
Cruz Azul head coach Paco Jemez has identified compatriot Torres as the top summer target and reports claim that a deal to bring former Liverpool and Chelsea forward to La Maquina is close to completion.
The Liga MX side’s representatives are arriving to Spain this week in order to try and close the deal for the experienced 33-year-old striker. Cruz Azul expedition will try to persuade Torres to join on a multi-million-pound contract.
Fernando Torres is likely to want to remain at Atletico for another year at least, but Paco Jemez is confident Cruz Azul will be able to persuade the Spanish striker with an offer that would be too good to turn down.
Given Torres’ advancing years, the Spanoish striker could face a challenge in holding a regular starting berth at Atletico this year with first-choice striker Antoine Griezmann, Kevin Gameiro and Luciano Vietto all believed to be standing in front of Torres in the pecking order.
Torres’ position could be put in an even tighter spot with a reported summer swoop for the French star Alexandre Lacazette.
