Feyenoord Rotterdam and arch rivals Ajax Amsterdam held each other to a 2-2 draw at De Kuip stadium on Sunday.

Traditionally dubbed the Dutch ‘Classic’, Ajax had been the much stronger team in recent years. Feyenoord won their last meeting in February 2006, and Ajax took the points in five of the last six occasions.

Sarpong put Ajax in the lead after 39 minutes but Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson, who returned to Rotterdam this summer, levelled five minutes after the break.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who finally recovered his goal-scoring habits, restored the away side’s advantage twenty minutes later.

But the points would be shared as Urby Emanuelson caused a penalty to Feyenoord in the 86th minute. Tomasson sent Maarten Stekelenburg the wrong way and struck into the upper left corner for 2-2.
