Feyenoord coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst has moved to confirm that star player Tonny Vilhena will be leaving De Kuip in the near future.
The 20-year-old has already caught the eye of Europe’s top sides and he is widely expected to leave for greener pastures in the January window.
And with the club officials failing to persuade Vilhena to sign a contract extension on the deal that expires in less than a year, coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst has come to terms with his prized asset leaving.
“I am sorry that Tonny did not want to stay,” van Bronckhorst told reporters after the 2-1 triumph over De Graafschap.
“But, I understand him sometimes. He wants to play at a higher level.”
The talented midfielder recently changed his agent and his career is now managed by Jorge Mendes, whose clients also include Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho, among others.
Vilhena has come through the famous Feyenoord youth academy, and has so far managed 11 goals and 10 assists in 109 competitive appearances.
The youngster has been linked with the likes of Juventus, Sampdoria and Southampton in the past, and it remains to be seen where he will end up.
