Eredivisie giants Feyenoord have revealed they will not be making a bid to sign Real Madrid midfielder Royston Drenthe.
The Dutch winger returned to Santiago Bernabeu after his loan deal at Everton was ended prematurely, but he is aware he is not in Jose Mourinho’s plans for the upcoming season.
Drenthe is, therefore, looking for a new club and he recently hinted that he would be interested in a return to De Kuyp.
However, Feyenoord technical director Martin van Geel explains that there isn’t enough room in the budget to accommodate the player’s hefty wage.
“We still have room for a number nine and number ten. Then, it’s a full budget,” Van Geel told Dutch Radio 1.
“Drenthe is a fantastic player and would certainly be a great addition to the squad, but there isn’t enough space left in the budget.”
The 25-year-old joined Real Madrid in a €14 million move following his impressive campaign at the 2007 Under-21 European Championship, but he never quite managed to prove his worth at Santiago Bernabeu.
Drenthe did show some promise during loan spells at Hercules and Everton, but his unprofessional behaviour persuaded the two clubs it would be a major gamble to sign him on permanent transfer.
The promising winger is now looking for a new club, but offers are not exactly pouring in for his services.
