FIFA Women´s World Cup wrap: USA, Sweden book quarter-final spots

The USA reserved their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup with a 3-0 thrashing of Colombia in Sinsheim.

The win leaves the USA and Sweden undefeated on top of Group C, with Colombia and North Korea out of the tournament.

The USA took the lead after 12 minutes thanks to a marvellous strike from Heather O’Reilly.

The Sky Blue FC midfielder took possession on the edge of the box and slammed a shot past Sandra Sepulveda in the Colombia goal.

Megan Rapinoe scored the USA’s second goal five minutes after the break, and there was no way back for the South American nation when Carli Loyd made it 3-0 just before the hour mark.

In Saturday’s other game, a 64th-minute goal from Gothenburg midfielder Lisa Dahlqvist was enough to secure Sweden a 1-0 win over North Korea and a berth in the last eight.

After creating several chances only to be denied by North Korea’s dogged defence, Linda Forsberg produced a stunning cross to Therese Sjorgren, who teed the ball up nicely for Dahlqvist to blast home from close range.
