Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis could soon be joining Chelsea, according to Catalan daily newspaper Sport.
The Blues have long ago made the Brazilian the number one target to replace Ashley Cole, but they did not seem prepared to meet the player’s €20 million release clause.
Chelsea initially offered €16 million for the player’s services, but Sport understands they have now decided to match the buy-out clause.
As a result, Filipe Luis will travel to London to undergo medical examination, meaning the deal could be announced in the coming days.
The 28-year-old has developed into one of Primera’s top left backs over the years and he enjoyed a very successful season with los Colchoneros last term, winning the league title in the process.
Many were surprised to see Luis miss out on Luiz Felipe Scolari’s World Cup squad and that proved a very poor decision by the coach as Marcelo was one of the worst players in the side at the tournament finals.
