Fiorentina chief Mario Cognigni has launched a scathing attack on Ricardo Montolivo after the player announced that he would leave the club on free next summer.
The Viola officials have been in talks with Montolivo’s representatives regarding the new deal, but the Italy international recently decided to reject a new contract offer.
Fiorentina chief Mario Cognigni was visibly angry with the player and his representatives.
“They pretended to be willing to agree, but there was no will. In fact, it was the opposite,” Cognigni told Corriere Fiorentino.
“We are bitter because Ricardo was not the icing on the cake. He was the centre of our cake: the captain, the symbol, the man chosen to represent our values.”
Cognigni also revealed that Montolivo had rejected a summer move to Roma.
“Roma offered us €10 million plus bonuses. Montolivo didn’t want to hear about it. Out of respect for Florence and Fiorentina, he said. And to go on a free transfer is respectful?”
